Clamp on taxi drivers

TED Thomas (South China Morning Post, October 14) can be assured that the police are indeed taking action to crack down on errant taxi drivers. Nearly 1,000 drivers have been prosecuted so far this year, with dozens more cases in the pipeline following police operations in Kowloon and on the Island over the last few weeks.

I regret that his suggestion of ''half a dozen plain clothes officers with a notebook and pencil recording the numbers of taxis refusing fares'', while admirably simple, would not solve the problem.

Many more officers than this are frequently deployed on taxi operations.
