Boys like their toys, as the old adage goes. But these days, with products like the Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention System 2.0 on the market, spinning tops and slingshots don't seem to cut it. The aforementioned item is the latest hi-tech gadget to hit the toy world. Combining your PC with the Lego pieces, motors and gears provided, you can construct your own robot and give it various commands. You can create anything from a robot that plays catch to a light-sensitive alarm to a robot that can follow a trail.

The RIS system is aimed at 12-year-olds and above, but has the characteristics of a toy even adults might enjoy, particularly after a heavy Christmas dinner. Forget the Robosapien, the RIS is this year's 'it' toy. It may burn a $2,200 hole in your pocket, but those who want to create an artist robot that manages three pens at a time may be tempted. A robot that washes up would be better.

The Lego Robotics System is available from Toys R Us; www.toysrus.com.hk.
