I wanna be a wedding photographer

What qualifications do you need?

Art sense and creativity. Most wedding photos are conventional and monotonous. Therefore, I try to come up with some innovative ideas for photos. Having knowledge in styling, photography, fashion and design is helpful too.

What sort of person does the job suit?

You should have good organisational skills as you will need to coordinate with various parties including makeup artists, hair stylists and fashion designers. Patience is important. We usually chat with the couples for about five hours before we start the preparation work. They will tell us what they need, and sometimes their love stories too.

What's the best way into the industry?

Equip yourself with different skills and solid arts training.

What work hours do you keep?

My studio opens from 11am to 8pm but my mind has to stay open for 24 hours.

Is there a clear career path?

It's a new business in Hong Kong so there isn't a clear career path. You can develop your career in whatever direction you wish - if possible, I'd like to expand my business to Shanghai. I'm also eager to collaborate with new fashion designers. Maybe one day I can set up my own label.

What is the best part of your job?

It's my dream career. I can put what I've learnt previously into practice on a daily basis. It's the sense of satisfaction that motivates me, especially when clients accept our ideas and look at the photos with smiling faces.

What is the worst?

My background is art and design. Sometimes I find it embarrassing to promote myself and negotiate the price with the clients.

Salary?

We charge around $14,000 for each project which includes everything you need for the wedding photos. How many weddings you cover is up to you, the time of year and your reputation.

Last word?

Wedding photos are not just for newly weds and their friends and families. I also have clients who have been married for 25 years.
