After a long wait, fans of pop diva Anita Mui Yim-fong might be heartened to hear that their idol will be immortalised in wax at Madame Tussauds on The Peak next March.

The South China Morning Post has learnt the wax museum recently approved the $900,000 project after a flurry of requests from fans since the star died from cervical cancer last December.

The Mui family has suggested the wax figure could be adorned in a recent concert outfit. It will be sculpted in Britain later this month.

The unveiling event will be one of the biggest at the museum before its temporary closure for a $15 million revamp and expansion next July. General manager Edward Fuller said it was too early to reveal which image of Mui would be used.

Mui's fan club has contributed many concert photos and videos for the museum's reference. Some fans have also said Mui's best look was as Carmen Miranda, with an assortment of fruit on her head.

'We will portray her in her style, based on one of her concerts,' he said. 'It will appear in a similar booth setting as [late pop star and actor] Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing's.'

Cheung's wax portrait, unveiled last April, wears a men's cheongsam, a look reminiscent of his role in the 1988 film Rouge. His famous song For your Heart Only is also played at the booth.

Perhaps to the disappointment of some fans, the two figures would not be placed close to each other, although the pair had been hailed as a perfect screen couple and were best friends in private life.

Mui began her singing career in 1968. She also appeared in more than 40 films in her career, and won best actress at the Golden Horse Film Awards for her role as the lovelorn ghost in search of her lover played by Cheung in Rouge.

Fans from around the world attended her funeral in January.
