I wanna be an elevator operator

What qualifications do you need?

The basic requirement is Form Five or above.

What sort of person does the job suit?

You must be presentable, polite, optimistic and not afraid to approach people as you will have to engage with customers constantly. You must be enthusiastic about your job and love to smile.

What are your job duties?

I am expected to take customers to the appropriate floor and answer their queries. Sometimes I have to guide special guests such as celebrities and artists at special functions.

What's the best way into the industry?

Respond to job adverts in newspapers or magazines, or write a letter to the Personnel Department of a company you would like to work for.

What work hours do you keep?

I work 8.5 hours per day, with some breaks in between.

Is there a clear career path?

When you first enter this industry, you will be Elevator Operator. Then you may become Senior Elevator Operator, Assistant Supervisor, Supervisor, etc.

What's the best part of your job?

The best thing is that I meet different kinds of people. Talking to them strengthens my communication skills and gives me experience in handling a variety of incidents.

What's the worst?

The worst thing is when I hear of a complaint. Sometimes, customers may complain that the lift is crowded or even criticise me for taking up space in the lift.

Who is your role model?

My mother. She also works for SOGO. With her experience, she teaches me how to deal with customers and tackle unexpected problems. This helps me to become a better Elevator Operator and have confidence in myself. At home, she takes care of me and gives me lots of mental support.

Salary?

The starting salary is $6,500 with a cosmetics allowance and a meal allowance.
