A dinner-auction at the China Club was the place to be for culture lovers last month, where more than $1 million was raised for the Asia Art Archive (AAA).

The event, attended by about 160 guests, was held on the 14th floor of the club, decorated with contemporary art. Although the live jazz music was soothing, the auction was exuberant. More than 40 works donated by artists and galleries went under the hammer - some auctioneered by Henry Howard-Sneyd, managing director of Sotheby's China, Southeast Asia and Australasia.

The Archive also received a cash donation of $186,000 from Martell Cognac. The cheque was presented to AAA directors Ronald Arculli, David Tang Wing-cheung, Pamela Kember, Jane DeBevoise, Johnson Chang Tsong-zung , Ben Cha and Claire Hsu.

Prominent guests included Allan and Charmaine Zeman, Francis Gouten, Yvette Yuen, Valerie Chow, Karen Chai Hui-xian, Jennifer Woo, Claudia Shaw d'Auriol, Paul Calello, Hans Michael Jebsen, Sherilyn Fung, Janet Nathanail, Bill Fianz, Aron Harilela and Guy d'Auriol.
