Hong Kong death toll climbs to 11

Five more Hong Kong residents were reported dead yesterday, taking the toll to 11, while 74 remain missing.

Thea Marchal, 10, her father Regis, 44, and mother Sylvie, 47, all died in the tsunami as the family was holidaying in Khao Lak, Thailand.

German national Markus Knoesel and a three-month-old French baby, both Hong Kong residents, were also reported dead in Thailand. Knoesel, who taught at the German Swiss International School in Hong Kong, died on Phi Phi island.

The baby boy, Thien Louis Nicholas Dabary, had been with his Thai mother Jutha and French father Nicholas at the Krathom Moken resort when the giant waves flooded their bungalow.

Mr Dabary, a manager with L'Oreal Hong Kong, was spared and his wife is in a Bangkok hospital with leg injuries. Thien was found three days after the tsunami, among the dead collected at the Pha San Temple.

Officials said 74 Hong Kong residents were still missing at noon yesterday, up from 60 on Sunday, with 42 in Thailand, 11 in Indonesia, two in Malaysia and 19 in other countries.

Two people were removed from the government website listing photos of missing Hong Kong residents yesterday. Lam Wai-sim, 26, was found safe, while the family of Lam Chi-tat, 64, wished his name removed. German national Gerda Bonnekamp, 59, was added to the list. Meanwhile, 870 Hong Kong residents remained stranded in tsunami-hit areas yesterday, down from Sunday's 920.
