If you're out and about this weekend, remember to wrap up warmly, say weather forecasters. The temperature in urban areas is expected to drop to 9 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

The Hong Kong Observatory said northern Guangdong was already experiencing cold weather and added that the winter monsoon would strengthen today, bringing chilly air to coastal areas of southern China. It issued a cold weather warning yesterday afternoon.

The temperature in urban areas today is forecast to drop to 11 degrees. The mercury is set to drop further in parts of the New Territories.

Warmer weather is expected to return on Monday and last for the rest of the week, with temperatures rising to a far more pleasant 17 degrees.

The Health Department said people should stay on their guard against flu, as Hong Kong had entered the peak flu period. Elderly people with heart or respiratory diseases, and patients with chronic illnesses, should take particular care to protect themselves against the cold, it added.
