Record festive rush for Guangzhou station
A record 2 million trips are expected to be handled by the Guangzhou Railway Station from January 25 during the rush home for the Lunar New Year.
The station handled 1.95 million in the same period last year.
Zhu Haibin , director of the station's party office, said the annual holiday rush would peak on February 4, 5 and 6, with the number of daily trips expected to reach 280,000, compared with 196,000 last year.
Mr Zhu said the problem of the station's limited capacity would only be eased in 2008 when a new station in Panyu would be ready to handle inter-city trips.
At peak periods during the 40-day holiday travel period, 19 trains are expected to depart and arrive every hour.
This year, the labour department has lifted a restriction on the number of migrant workers who can return home for the holiday, which falls on February 9.
In the past, only half the 19 million migrant workers in Guangdong were allowed to return home due to various reasons, including the capacity of railway network.
Guangzhou railway station plans to turn its underground car park and luggage holding areas into waiting areas if the number of waiting passengers exceeds 50,000 and will close its gates if the figure exceeds 100,000.
