To achieve top placing a challenge for Jamie

Name: Jamie Dalton

School: South Island School

Grade: Year 10

Sport: Dinghy sailing

Achievements: Jamie will be Hong Kong's sole representative at the Dubai Junior Regatta in the United Arab Emirates next week.

The 14-year-old will compete in the Laser 4.7 class against the world's best young sailors from 23 countries.

At last July's Laser World Junior Championships in Italy, Jamie achieved an impressive ranking of 11th in the under-15 Laser category.

He enters the Dubai competition after a period of intensive training in Hong Kong with World Radial Masters champion, David Early, and other top sailors, including former Australian champion Matt Toulter.

Jamie is aiming to finish in the top 10, which would be a significant step in his build-up to the next World Junior Championships off Rhode Island in the United States this August.

Soundbite: 'I like the feeling that you get from a sport which can be quite dangerous at times in a fast boat. It's a challenge to achieve a top placing.

'There is so much skill and handling involved, and it's always great to know you've given your best after a hard, one-hour race.'

Interests: Jamie is also a diver and rock climber. He plays tennis, is a member of the school swimming team and a fan of war-games such as Paintball.

From his coach: 'Jamie is a very keen and enthusiastic sailor who has great potential to succeed at the highest level,' said Hong Kong coach Andy Service.

'He is learning all the time. Dubai will be a good experience, sailing in large fleets and big waves.'

Ambitions: Jamie's main sailing goal this year is to get a top-10 place at the World Junior Championships. In the long term, he wants to compete at the Olympics for Hong Kong, and would like to study boat architecture at a university in the United Kingdom or Australia.
