Participants are divided into five age groups and points are awarded to the top eight competitors in each event. After the four legs, athletes with the highest accumulated points will emerge champions.

Yik-chun shares top position in the A1 category with 400m ace Sandro Bessetto. Both are on 18 points. Hau-sze and middle-distance runner Lo Wing-hei share the girls' Grade B lead - two clear of the chasing pack on 18 points.

The cold weather had little effect on speed king Yik-chun. The 18-year-old student from Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College re-wrote both the Hong Kong junior and the boys' A1 age group records for the 200m with a time of 21.27 seconds.

Yik-chun won the final with another fast time of 21.33 seconds, while he clocked 10.68 seconds to win the boys' A1 100m. His Watson's teammate, Lai Chun-ho, won the boys' A2 100m with a time of 11.34 seconds.

Hau-sze, 13, clocked 25.97 seconds in the girls' B 200m heats - a new Hong Kong age group record. In winning the final, she improved her time to 25.85 seconds, but it didn't count as it was wind-assisted.

The Diocesan Girls' School student also won the girls' B 100m final in 12.39 seconds - even faster than athletes in the girls' A1 and A2 categories.

Other highlights included the girls' A2 discus, where Elaine Chan Yu-ning set a new Hong Kong age group record with a throw of 36.47 metres. And Pang Ying-kit won the boys' Grade C high jump with an impressive leap of 1.60 metres.

Wing-hei was at her best in the girls' B 1,500m, where she set a new Hong Kong age group record (4 minutes, 59.15 seconds).

The next round is on March 19 and 20.
