Database will track debtors

Deadbeat debtors who refuse to make court-ordered payments will not be allowed to buy property, travel overseas or set up companies when a court database comes online in the middle of this year.

Yu Lingyu, head of the People's Supreme Court Enforcement Office, told a seminar last week the national system would also stop debtors from getting loans and buying cars 'until they pay back the debt according to the verdict'.

He said judicial authorities would 'work fully' with all relevant departments and agencies to implement the ban.

The system would be ready in six months, said an official from China Court Website, the organisation compiling the database.

There are about 2.5 million cases of court-ordered payments each year, with judicial authorities required to intervene in about half of them. Mr Yu said he expected the online database to cut the number of defaults by 10 per cent.
