A mainland vessel ran aground after apparently hitting a rock yesterday near Big Wave Bay, spilling thousands of cartons of chilled chicken products into the sea

Much of its cargo was left floating in the waters or scattered on the beach nearby.

The government will continue clearing the area today.

The 24-metre-long vessel, which was loaded with 2,879 cartons of food, left Chai Wan for Huizhou - northeast of Shenzhen - on Wednesday.

It ran into trouble later that evening and police received a call saying the crew were in distress at about 1am on Thursday.

Police launches were sent and the mainland crew of five were rescued, all unhurt.

They have since been handed over to the Immigration Department, which has made contact with the crew's company.

Because of darkness a tow boat from the Marine Department was unable to move the boat until sunrise on Thursday.

The police said some of the boat's stock could not be recovered and had most likely been swept away.
