Cathay bans news of pay dispute

Cathay Pacific has been accused of censorship after it removed newspaper cuttings about a flight attendants' pay dispute from a union notice board and banned the display of any more.

Management removed the cuttings - including several South China Morning Post reports - from the Flight Attendants Union notice board in the cabin crew lounge at Cathay City, Chek Lap Kok, saying staff must be given only 'accurate and unbiased information'.

The action, described as tyrannical by union leader Becky Kwan Siu-wa, comes ahead of a Court of First Instance case starting on Wednesday where cabin crew will claim Cathay breached contracts by denying automatic annual pay rises.

Cathay said it removed the press cuttings after concerns over articles that wrongly suggested flight attendants might take industrial action.

In a memo to the union, Richard Sell, manager for cabin crew relations, instructed Ms Kwan to refrain from posting press clippings on the notice board until further notice.
