No need for briefing, says chairman

Jimmy Cheung

Concerns were yesterday raised over Legislator Philip Wong Yu-hong's dismissal of the need to hold a press conference on the Public Accounts Committee's report.

The committee chairman said he only met the media for 'PR' reasons, after being lobbied by fellow committee members to hold a news conference. But Mr Wong insisted he had nothing more to add to the report and repeatedly told reporters to dig out the answers themselves from the 464-page document. 'I really don't see the need for a press conference. As the chairman, I shouldn't go beyond what has been said in the report. It would be unfair,' he said.

He remained non-committal about following predecessor Eric Li Ka-cheung's practice of meeting the media after the delivery of a report. 'It is rather difficult to respond to reporters' questions in an hour or so.'

Committee member Democrat Andrew Cheng Kar-foo plans to raise the suggestion of a spokesman on each topic when future reports are delivered.
