Key-fine woman faces court showdown

Hygiene chiefs will fight a housewife in court after she refused to pay a $1,500 littering fine for dropping what she says was her house key by accident near her home.

The court battle comes after the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department finished an internal investigation into a complaint by the housewife, Lau Shiu-fun, 55, who said she was framed by eight hygiene officers on January 3 in Ma Tau Wai.

The decision to prosecute was made after consulting government lawyers.

'The version of events given by Mrs Lau and that given by the officers are entirely different,' the hygiene department said.

'There is no corroborative evidence to support her version or cast doubt upon the officers' statements.

'It is found desirable to let the case be tried in court.'

Mrs Lau insists she dropped the key by accident.

'I will not pay a cent. I made all this noise because I refuse to be intimidated,' she said.
