NPC & CPPCC

The National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) will kick off their annual plenary sessions in Beijing on Thursday and Saturday.

From today onwards, the South China Morning Post brings you a series of reports previewing major topics to be addressed while reviewing the government's performance in key areas since the last meeting.

This week's meetings are the first to be held since President Hu Jintao took over the leadership of the Communist Party's Central Military Commission from Jiang Zemin .

Against the background of a massive reshuffle of ministerial and provincial-level officials which began in December, the sessions will see the country's new leaders swing into action.

In addition to setting the tone of the political and economic policies in the coming year, the meetings will also vet and discuss important legislation, such as the anti-secession law, as well as ways to protect state assets and deal with the major economic challenges that lie ahead.

The Post's team of reporters will bring you the most comprehensive and insightful reports in the days ahead.
