The government said on Friday tolls for cars and taxis on the Eastern Harbour Crossing (EHC) will be increased by $10 from $15 to $25, with corresponding increases for other vehicles.

The new tolls for the EHC will take effect from May 1, 2005.

A government spokesman said after discussion with the government, the New Hong Kong Tunnel Company, franchisee of EHC, agreed to defer the toll increases for empty taxis to July 1, and the increase for light buses to October 1.

'We are very disappointed at the outcome of the arbitration and are extremely concerned about the toll increase,' he said.

But he said the government had to accept the outcome of the arbitration.

?We note that the New Hong Kong Tunnel Company has its own commercial considerations. As required under the EHC Ordinance, the Commissioner for Transport shall amend the toll schedule in the Ordinance according to the award as soon as is practicable,? he added.
