Shanghai Restaurant

Winnie Yeung

1/F Cambridge House, Taikoo Place, 979 King's Rd, Quarry Bay

Tel: 2284 4899

Open: 11.30am-11.30pm

Cuisine: Shanghainese.

Ambience: Modern decor in a typical Chinese restaurant setting. For smaller parties, there are several booths, offering a little extra privacy.

Price: Reasonable, considering the quality of the food. Dinner is about $140 per person

without wine.

Pros: The food - which is delicious, and served in large quantities. The waiters are friendly and polite.

Cons: It's those friendly waiters again. They tend to hover - as if to indicate you're eating too slowly. Also, the menu on the table is only in Chinese. You have to ask if you need it in English.

Recommended dishes: The country-style stewed pork leg (below, $88 for small, $160 for regular) is an essential dish for almost all Shanghainese restaurants. We ordered a small portion and it was large enough for at least four. The meat was tender, the fat melted deliciously in the mouth and the sauce was sweet but well-balanced. Try the fried rice patties with crab roe ($120) - the two main ingredients complement each other wonderfully.

What else? A live band performs evergreen hits in Chinese and English at dinner, which may be a little noisy for people who want a quiet chat, but is a treat for those who like to be entertained.
