Students turn designers for fund raiser
The cold weather last Sunday did not stop some 200 students from expressing their care for mountain children in China.
In the T-shirt design fund-raising event at Kowloon Park, students of primary, secondary schools and universities drew original patterns with their messages of goodwill. They pieced the T-shirts together into a giant puzzle which will be delivered to children in Yunnan province during a summer visit.
Organised by University-YMCA, a student organisation in Hong Kong Baptist University, the event raised $30,000, which will be used to buy books, stationary and sports equipment for the children.
University-YMCA social service officer Chu Siu-yee said children she had met in mountain villages were fit and had great sports potential, but lacked facilities. 'Even though their classrooms were shabby and the desks and chairs were broken, we think those children are entitled to a normal and happy childhood. We hope they will have fun playing football and basketball,' she said.
The organisation is also holding a series of charity sales to fund more supplies.
