Licence to grill

Japanese restaurant Kushiyaki (below) opened on the first day of the Lunar New Year in Langham Place, Mongkok. The owner, Albert Cheung, also has a cha chan teng (tea cafe) in the neighbourhood. If you have some knowledge of Japanese culinary terms, you'll have guessed the restaurant specialises in meat, seafood and vegetables put on skewers and grilled (kushiyaki). Some of the more interesting items on the menu are boneless chicken wings stuffed with goose liver and scallions ($36 each), camel hump ($18), fried ostrich roll wrapped with asparagus and chilli ($28) and sea urchin with bamboo shoot ($38). For less adventurous eaters, the menu also includes items such as skewers of pork belly with leeks ($14), minced chicken fillet ($13) and marinated eel ($18), as well as sushi and sashimi, noodles (ramen, soba and udon), tempura, dumplings and Japanese pizza.

Kushiyaki is at shop 1209, 12/F, Langham Place, Mongkok, tel: 3514 4333.
