Customs raid pirated VCD stores

Customs officers yesterday seized about 20,000 pirated video compact disks (VCD) worth up to $600,000 from 22 stores in Mong Kok.

A spokesman said on Thursday the seizure included a batch of well-packaged pirated copies of Howl?s Moving Castle ? a newly released Japanese cartoon film.

He said officers also smashed two pirate VCD storage centres in North Point and Wan Chai following a complaint from a Japanese cartoon production house.

They seized 180,000 pirated copies, worth $5.4 million.

During the operation, 17 men, aged between 19 and 60, and a 31 year-old woman were arrested.

The spokesman said the storage centres supplied pirated VCDs to the raided stores in Mong Kok.
