Woman who lit fatal fire jailed for three years: report
Updated at 2.00pm:
A woman who deliberately lit a fire in her apartment which killed her husband was sentenced to three years jail in the High Court on Thursday, Chinese language newspapers reported on Friday.
A breakdown in the relationship between the 42-year-old housewife from the mainland and her 62-year-old husband caused the tragedy, the Sing Pao Daily News reported.
As part of a suicide attempt, the housewife, surnamed Hau, set her apartment alight in Tai Po last May. Her husband and three-year-old daughter were also in the flat at the time.
Hau and her daughter were rescued, but her husband died of severe burns after being rushed to hospital, the paper said.
Appealing to the judge, Hau's lawyer said the woman had been frequently insulted by her father-in-law because of her mainland background. Hau had been called 'a virtual prostitute who came to Hong Kong only for money', the paper reported.
The lawyer also said Hau's husband told her to work as a prostitute during a quarrel the day she lit the fire, according to the paper.
The judge said the three-year jail term was given as a deterrent. It reflected the seriousness of the crime, he added.
