Shum on track to end the season in dazzling style

Sophomore trainer Danny Shum Chap-shing should finish the season as strongly as he began it, after All's Well and Elegant King Prawn showed enough class to win their respective heats at Sha Tin.

The real eye catcher from the Shum yard was griffin All's Well. This son of the relatively new stallion City On A Hill was withdrawn from his intended debut on May 7 when he became fractious and reared in the stalls.

However, yesterday he looked more relaxed when winning the fourth heat over 1,000 metres with Robbie Fradd up.

All's Well should prove competitive in a griffin contest and looks good enough to win before the end of the season.

Dennis Yip Chor-hong's Rum Shot confirmed the promise displayed in a trial on May 3 when finishing second.

Stablemate Shatin Win Win (rated 62) moved well behind the leading brigade. He had won one of five starts in Australia and looks well treated on his overseas form.

Shum won the second heat with impressive Elegant King Prawn. He has improved since scoring on debut over 1,000m and looks a bright prospect for the future. There was some merit in the performance of runner-up Fat Choy Forever. The lightly raced galloper has shown potential in a handful of starts but has also had his share of problems.

Providing he stays sound, he should prove competitive next-up.

Douglas Whyte teamed up with Tony Millard to win the opening heat over 800m with Brains Trust, who clocked an impressive 45.5 seconds.

Brains Trust displayed marked improvement on his second start, and this trial indicated he has improved further since finishing fourth to Royal Decree last month.

Andy Leung Ting-wah's Propeller, who finished fourth, displayed good early speed before being switched off in the final furlong. He showed enough ability to warrant respect.

Almond Lee Yee-tat won the third heat with Elite Win, who was pushed out to win by Corey Brown. But the main one to note was David Hall's Silver Mark. He settled back in the field in the early stages but worked home nicely and looks worth a closer look in the coming weeks.

ONES TO NOTE:

All's Well, Fat Choy Forever, Silver Mark.
