Intensive course helps graduates choose a career

A global health-care company, which takes pride in its community projects and emphasises teamwork, is looking for fresh graduates to join its apprenticeship programme.

Pfizer, the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical company, discovers, develops, manufactures and markets medicines for humans and animals, as well as many consumer health-care products.

Its graduate apprenticeship programme is an intensive five-week development course.

Set up as one of Pfizer's many community projects, its main goal is to 'help fresh graduates make up their minds about the kind of profession or industry they should join,' said Polly Cho, the director of human resources at Pfizer's Hong Kong offices.

After completing the course, participants should have a clearer idea of how a company functions, she said.

'The programme aims to assist individuals to develop a career and help them to have a look at what a genuine working situation is like. Apart from the general orientation of various functions, you'll have the chance to be attached to one of the departments, so you will get to understand their operation,' she said.

In particular, participants are given a specific project to follow, with the goal of learning how to work with - and communicate with - colleagues in the process.

'At the end, there is a self-assessment test to facilitate understanding of your character,' said Ms Cho. The aim of the test is to help reduce the false starts graduates make when picking a career. Are there any long-term opportunities?

'Pfizer is a global company with ample opportunities. We have different departments with wide perspectives. We ranked number three in Training magazine's top 100 for our efforts in training and developing our colleagues. We provide world-class training and have a passion for health. It is a first step to a global career,' Ms Cho said.
