Traffic jam puts bus passengers on foot
Hundreds of bus passengers were forced to walk part of their journeys when a three-vehicle pile-up caused heavy congestion on Kwai Chung Road for nearly two hours last night. The accident happened just before 9pm, when a minibus stopped to fix a puncture on the Kowloon-bound side near Mei Foo and two other minibuses stopped to help. A passing bus tried to change lanes to avoid the group, causing a taxi behind it to hit the side of the bus and then the kerb. The taxi then hit a van, which rammed the bus. The drivers of all three vehicles were hurt and taken to Princess Margaret and Caritas hospitals.
Woman steals phone, threatens to kill herself
A woman threatened to commit suicide and rammed her head against a wall in her home in Tuen Mun after she was accused of stealing a mobile phone from a neighbour. The woman, 48, had been invited to her neighbour's flat in Leung King Estate by his mother at 1.30am but she ran back to her own flat and locked herself in after he accused her of the theft. She became emotional when police arrived but eventually calmed down and her daughter, 18, opened the door. The woman was arrested when officers found the mobile phone on her. Last night she was being treated for head injuries at Tuen Mun Hospital.
camp proves quite an experience for Boy
A 'life experience' camp lived up to its name for an 11-year-old boy who was sent to hospital after being bitten by mosquitoes during the three-day adventure at Fanling. An ambulance was called to the Suen Douh Camp, run by the Christian and Missionary Alliance, in the Lung Yeuk Tau section of Sha Tau Kok Road, at 10am when teachers found the boy's eyelids were swollen and about 20 mosquito bites on his limbs and head. He was treated at North District Hospital.
More people are depressed
The number of people diagnosed with depression has risen more than 12 per cent, or 2,500 cases, over the past year. Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food York Chow Yat-ngok said 21,240 people had been diagnosed and treated in public hospitals and clinics in the 12 months to April, compared with 18,586 in the previous year. Almost three times as many women as men were treated for depression.
Sai Kung Beach reopens
Sai Kung's Silverstrand Beach has reopened to swimmers. It was declared off-limits on Friday when water quality was downgraded to Grade 4. The Environmental Protection Department said it had returned to Grade 2 and was suitable for swimming.
women hurt in bus mishap
Two women, aged 35 and 37, were injured when knocked down by a bus. A woman passenger, 56, was also injured when the bus braked heavily in Laguna Verde Avenue, Hunghom, at 2.30pm. The three women were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.
driver injured after fire
A driver injured his legs when he jumped from his burning container truck in Lok Ma Chau. The man, 54, pulled over on the San Tin Highway near Mai Po Lung when his truck's front right tyre caught fire just before 12.30pm. He was treated at North District Hospital.
Decorating gear stolen
Decorating equipment worth about $13,000 was stolen from a flat in Aberdeen. Police were called to the flat in Tung Yip House, Lei Tung Estate, when a worker arrived and found the door's lock damaged and unit ransacked.
