Web links schools and police

Tuen Mun Police District and Lingnan University teamed up to launch Hong Kong's first police-school network website this week to enable students to learn more about crime through the internet.

Aimed at providing a means of electronic communication between schools and the police in Tuen Mun, the website - 'Tuen Mun Police/School Network' - offers information about crime prevention and its school ambassador programme.

It also contains contact details for police secondary school liaison officers to help foster better communication between the police and schools, parents and students.

'Youngsters can talk to us and provide us with information [about crimes],' Chief Inspector Roger Mui Lam-sang said.

'During the trial period of the website, we have obtained information and clues from students about certain crimes,' he added.

According to police figures, there were about 600 crimes involving teenagers aged 10-16 in Tuen Mun in 2003 and 2004. About 60 per cent of the offences were thefts. Juveniles accounted for 12 per cent of all arrests.

The website has recorded more than 440 hits in its first two days of operation.

Lingnan University is providing technical support for the website while the police are responsible for content. Apart from providing resources relating to juvenile crimes, the network will relay crime prevention advice to schools.
