Politicians pay respects to Peter Tsao

Political figures yesterday began bidding farewell to former secretary for home affairs Peter Tsao Kwang-yung.

Chief executive-designate Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, former Executive Council convenor Chung Sze-yuen, and veteran politician Allen Lee Peng-fei paid their respects to Tsao at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point.

Director of Lands Patrick Lau Lai-chiu and former transport commissioner Robert Footman also attended the official mourning session that began last night.

A photo of Tsao in a black suit and bow-tie was flanked by a sea of white flowers and candles that filled the front of the hall.

Dr Chung said: 'I've been friends with Peter Tsao for many years. I am very saddened.'

Tsao died on June 5 after suffering heart failure, the result of complications from diabetes, at his home in Thailand. He was aged 72.

Tsao joined the civil service in 1955 and held numerous positions over 36 years. He was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1989. After retiring in 1991, he lived in Thailand with his wife. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter.
