Setting out monitoring figures
I REFER to the letter from Fabian Pedrazzini (South China Morning Post, October 19) headlined, ''EDP silence unjustifiable'', concerning monitoring information in respect of the sewage treatment plant at Ma Po Ping Prison.
I found the headline somewhat galling, as our previous reply to Mr Pedrazzini (Post, October 6) contained the information requested by him. However, it was deleted from the published version. The information requested is set out again for easy reference.
In the particular case of Ma Po Ping Prison, the Drainage Services Department which operates the plant on behalf of the Correctional Services Department, has agreed that we can release our monitoring figures and these are as set out as follows: Input strength of raw sewage - Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), 270 mg/l (milligrams per litre); Suspended Solids (SS), 220 mg/l; E. Coli, 107.
License conditions at Ma Po Ping - BOD, 20mg/l; SS, 30 mg/l; E. Coli, 103.
Effluent samples at Ma Po Ping - BOD, 40 mg/l; SS, 15 mg/l; E. Coli, four by 106.
