Power supply disrupted in Kowloon East following fire

Updated at 5.04pm: The power supply to some Kwun Tong housing estates was disrupted for several hours ? after a fire broke out at a China Light & Power facility in the district, local radio reported on Tuesday.

The blaze, which started around 10am following a slight explosion, was believed to have been caused by a failure at a power sub-station near Shun Lee Estate.

The disruption affected as many as 11,000 households in Kowloon East on Tuesday. The power supply to about 2,000 households in Shun Lee, Shun Tin and Shun On Estate was affected until 4pm.

A worker at the sub-station was injured in the blaze. He was rushed to the United Christian hospital, but has now been discharged.

Fire fighters said about 10 people had been stranded in lifts in near-by estates during the disruption.

A China Light & Power spokesman said the cause of the fire had still not been confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.
