Despite being half submerged, the Dragon Goddess Temple in Yuecheng, Guangdong, is attracting visitors from nearby cities who pray for an end to the flood that has ravaged the Pearl River Delta.

Yuecheng, part of Zhaoqing city, is among the worst affected areas in Guangdong. The level of the Pearl River was at its highest in 90 years after days of heavy downpours.

While floods in most cities have begun to subside, Yuecheng, 150km west of Guangzhou, was still under water yesterday. But the small trading town sitting on the bank of Xijiang is not completely cut off.

Many people have made special trips to the submerged town, which has an ancient Dragon Goddess Temple.

In traditional folklore, the dragon king and goddess are in charge of rain and water. But even the goddess' divine power could not prevent the temple being submerged by the worst deluge in two decades.

This did not stop worshipper Ma Dajun , from nearby Zhaoqing, visiting the temple. Mr Ma, who paid 20 yuan to hire a boat to get there, said he prayed for the water level to drop.
