Japan to join maritime drill

Japan will send a coastguard boat to join a maritime drill with mainland ships for the first time. The patrol boat Satsuma, with a crew of 45, will take part in a search-and-recovery exercise off Shanghai this weekend.

'Japan asked to take part in this drill because, at present, Japan and China have no experience of joint search-and-recovery operations and we need to improve our skills in this area,' coastguard spokeswoman Sanae Tanaka said.
