Former Cookies member Kary Ng Ka-wing is making the transition from teenage idol to R&B artist.

After the nine-member band disbanded, the 19-year-old went solo and is now recording her debut album, which has loads of R&B sound. 'It's really different from what I've done. I've never performed this type of music before,' said Ng (above), who also sings in rock band Ping Pung. 'I listen to a lot of hip-hop and R&B music. I hope I can introduce my favourite music to my fans.' She said although she wouldn't get involved in the songwriting process, she had more say on the choice of songs and lyrics for the record.

The project has posed some unexpected challenges. Last month, the singer flew to Taiwan to record a Putonghua song for the record - as yet untitled - due out in September.

'I experienced an earthquake for the first time in my life. I was so scared,' she said. 'I was playing on the computer in the hotel room after the recording. Suddenly, everything was shaking. I didn't know what to do but shout 'help'!'
