Watsons shops to get facelift

Hutchison Whampoa's health and beauty retail chain Watsons will counter an expected consumer slowdown by spending about $20 million to upgrade 170 shops.

David Boynton, the managing director of Watsons' Hong Kong operations, agreed with economists' forecasts of weakened consumer confidence in the second half of the year on the back of interest-rate rises.

'However, we will able to ride it out with our store renovation and expansion,' he said at the unveiling of a revamped store in Causeway Bay yesterday.

The upgrades include expanding product selection of fragrances, make-up and skin-care goods, snacks and pharmaceutical products.
