Fradd escapes injury in Durban July

Hong Kong-based jockey Robbie Fradd escaped without harm when champion three-year-old Rabiya fractured a leg during South Africa's most important race on the weekend.

The champion three-year-old shattered his off hind leg approaching the home straight in the Durban July at Greyville, with Fradd making a hasty leap to safety before Rabiya fell. The horse was soon after put down by race club vets attending the scene.

'It sounded like the report of a gun,' said Fradd, who had missed the final Hong Kong meeting at Happy Valley to gallop warm favourite Rabiya in his lead-up work to the race.

The July was instead won by the rank outsider Dunford, who was ridden by Anton Marcus and gave the jockey his third win in the prestigious race.

Runner-up was Gauteng Derby winner Silverpoint, trained by David Ferraris' father Ormond, who failed by half a length to give Anthony Delpech back-to-back wins in the event he had won 12 months earlier on Grey's Inn.
