Stylish designs to spruce up your home

Horizon Plaza offers a one-stop shopping experience for everything needed to give living space a facelift

There is growing interest in redecorating homes, fuelling demand for furniture and associated accessories.

But retailers have to come up with innovative collections or unique designs - rather than offering a wider selection of products - to win the hearts of consumers.

At Horizon Plaza in Ap Lei Chau there is a potpourri of well-designed home furnishings in several retail outlets which offer a one-stop shopping experience.

In the Rimba Rhyme shop, there is a new collection of Chinese-style Art Deco furniture including sofas, dining room sets and beds, plus an impressive lineup of accessories.

Creative director Jonathan Chong said the Art Deco concept originated in Europe in the 1920s, particularly in France, Germany and the Netherlands.

'When the Europeans came to China they brought the idea. Art Deco then flourished in major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Qingdao and Beijing and was stopped during wartime. It resurfaced in the 1950s,' he said.

Extending the 1950s glamour, Rimba Rhyme's Chinese-style Art Deco collection uniquely combines the simplicity and practical nature of western design with oriental forms and shapes. The basic tone is plain and clear, adorned with geometric patterns.

Sofa designs can be tailor-made in Art Deco or club chair styles. The spring-seaters are covered with plain coloured or patterned fabrics, synthetic suede or leather.

The shop offers limited edition designs made of hand-woven English cotton fabric.

Mr Chong said that the in colours for this summer were off-white and light green, or a mix of off-white with beige or light brown.

He said people looking for Chinese wooden furniture should mix and match an assortment of fabrics such as curtain and lace materials, to soften the touch and create a cosy living space.

At Rimba Rhyme, the most popular items are primitive day beds handmade from old wood in Indonesia. Their simple designs can brighten up the house with an assortment of fabrics, cushions and mats or rugs.

Intohome has refurnished its studio at Horizon Plaza and is introducing the Margaret Muir furniture range.

This collection represents the vision of one woman and her search for uncomplicated sophistication, according to sales and marketing manager Pep Wong.

The bedding range includes duvet covers and sheets made of 100 per cent pure cotton percale, while embroidered items are intricately detailed.

'Margaret Muir furniture is hand-made. All items in the collection are available in natural and mid-brown finishes,' Ms Wong said.

'Our designs can work throughout the home - in the bedroom and to accessorise informal living areas. We use bright geometrics with beautiful floral bed linen to give a contemporary summer look and add individual cushions and hand-embroidered quilts for a more luxurious and relaxing appeal.'

Intohome has a furniture line made of reclaimed elm wood. Furniture designs are elegant, sophisticated and modern.

'Each piece is completely hand-made in solid wood. We offer natural and brown finishes for all furniture,' Ms Wong said.

The shop has introduced a range of children's furniture that includes a bunk bed, computer desk and shelf, a desk and a chair. These sets are made of elm in a natural or brown finish.

Irony Home offers an extensive range of unique furnishings that combine hand-forged iron, stone, glass and capiz shell.

Shoppers can choose from an exotic array of distinctive and functional products including contemporary iron beds and quality Egyptian linen, versatile indoor and outdoor furniture, mirrors, lighting, unique accessories and gifts. A range of Egyptian fine cotton linen has just arrived.

Irony Home controls the manufacturing of its merchandise, allowing it to monitor the quality and eliminate unnecessary middleman involvement in the supply chain. The company offers high-quality, uniquely designed furniture and accessories at affordable prices.

The trends for furniture this summer are natural weaves and earth jewel tones. New summer items are capiz lighting, candleholders and place mats, and turquoise is the hot hue.

Organza screen curtains and matching satin cushions with a wide selection of chairs, framed mirrors, stools and side tables can also enhance your home environment.

Irony Home carries a wide range of stone composite fountains and statues for the terrace or garden. The shop has a warehouse clearance sale on now while stocks last.

In addition to its two Hong Kong locations - at Horizon Plaza and Wyndham Street in Central - the company has stores in Vancouver, Dubai and Melbourne.
