Sporting heroes scoop four golds

Hong Kong athletes rose to meet the challenge of visiting competitors in the Inter-City Athletic Meet at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground over the weekend - winning four gold medals.

Teams from China, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States took part in the two-day event.

Young high jumper Lam Ho-fung cleared 2.01m to take the men's junior title while Lam Lai-shan took the women's junior title clearing 1.56m.

Hong Kong's Tsang Kwun-kau was the discus champion with a throw of 34.36m. Teammates Yeung Kin-kam and Fung Chi-kwong were second and third, with 24.90m and 21.44m respectively.

The women's 100m relay team of Leung Shuk-wa, Pang Hok-man, Wan Kin-yee and Chan Ho-yee won the women's 4x100m race in 47.20 seconds.

In the men's open 110m hurdles, a highlight event, Liu Zhu from Auhui won in 14.61 seconds. Hong Kong's Tang Hong-sing finished in fourth.

In the men's open 100m, Arnold Villarube of the Philippines won in 10.85 seconds. Narendran Shanmuganthan from Malaysia finished second with Pooltong Taweesak from Thailand third.

Tang Yik-chun took part in the men's open 400m. He clocked 49.7 seconds to finish fourth.

In the women's junior 100m, Leung Hau-sze clocked 12.75 seconds to place third. She was the 200m junior champion on Saturday.

There was disappointment for the Hong Kong men's relay squad however. After crossing the line in first place, they were disqualified for transferring the baton illegally. The mistake happened between To Wai-lok and Chiang Wai-hung, the 100m national record holder, before the fourth leg.

'I'm disappointed because I though we had won it,' said Chiang.

The inter-city meet is a new event that aims to encourage local athletes in the run-up to the 2009 East Asian Games - the first major multi-sport event ever to be held in Hong Kong.
