Drugs couple hide Ice in swimwear
A man wearing a woman's swimsuit under his clothes to conceal several kilograms of the illegal drug Ice was arrested at Chek Lap Kok as he prepared to board a flight to New Zealand. A woman in the same attire was also held for trying to smuggle the drug.
Between them they had hidden 6kg of Ice in vests under the one-piece swimsuits, customs officers said. They believe the pair wore the swimsuits to hold the Ice tight to their bodies in the hope of evading suspicion.
The Ice, worth $2.1 million in Hong Kong, would fetch $30 million in New Zealand.
The man, aged 58, was arrested on Monday morning on information from the woman, 36, who had been detained minutes earlier by airport security staff.
The New Zealand authorities were informed about the arrests and the head of customs' drug investigation group, John Lee Cheung-wing, said more people could be arrested in relation to the case.
Initial investigations showed the seized drugs were manufactured on the mainland. The purity of the Ice was high but it was yellow rather than transparent - meaning it had been badly made, said Mr Lee.
The seizure of Ice was the biggest at the airport in three years. Last year, 17kg was intercepted.
