Tam helps Hong Kong open with a win over Singapore

Former Chong Gene Hang College basketball talent Tam Wai-yeung will be a key player for Hong Kong as they aim to reach the semi-finals of the Eastcolight Super Kung Sheung Cup tonight at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

Hong Kong were in top form on Tuesday night, easily beating regional rivals Singapore 88-59 in front of 1,300 fans in their opening Group A match. Last night they took on Malaysia, and tonight they meet Guangzhou in the deciding Group game.

A win could set them up against the Asian-American Sports Club, from California in the United States, in Saturday's semi-final match at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

The SAR are bidding for a third consecutive cup and a fourth title in five years. Hong Kong dominated the Singaporeans, with giant centre Sung Fong and guard Wu Kwok-fung both netting 12 points.

Other contributors to Hong Kong's victory were Lui Chor-wai, who had 11 points. Ng Wah-fung and Tam both netted 10 points. Forward Tam, a three-time winner of the Hong Kong and Kowloon School Sports Boy of the Year award in the past, added five rebounds, five blocks and had an 83 per cent shooting average.

Hong Kong coach Mak Kam-fai said that he was happy following the opening win.

The SAR's dominance over the Singaporeans continued, having beaten the visitors during last year's tournament.

'So far so good,' said Mak. 'We have made a good start and I think we dominated much of the match from start to finish. We defended well and attacked well and it was a good performance overall.'

Malaysia gave China Guangzhou a hard time before the mainlanders finally prevailed 75-72 in Tuesday's hardest-fought encounter.

In Tuesday night's other matches, the Philippines opened their account in group B by defeating the mainland's Fukien Xin Cheng 96-78, while the Asian-American Sports Club brushed aside Thailand 99-65.
