Condoms found to leak or burst

Three of 28 condom brands tested by the Consumer Council were found to leak or burst under pressure, including one of the most expensive brands tested.

Infinity condoms - at $7.30 a piece, the second-most expensive brand tested - failed to meet international leakage and pressure thresholds. Six of 315 samples failed the leakage test, while 23 failed the pressure test.

The Wedding Strawberry Flavour Form Fitted & Dotted condom failed to meet pressure requirements in 26 of 315 tests, while four of 315 Wonder Life Fruit Flavour samples failed the leakage test.

'The failure rate was a minimal 0.19 per cent, but nonetheless that is still a risk - though a very slim one - that condom users have to face in the prevention of pregnancy and STDs, in particular Aids,' said Matthew Ng, of the publicity and community relations committee. 'The most expensive are not necessarily the best as our test results showed that some of the cheaper brands performed very well.

'But in addition to the quality of the condom, there is the usage. Proper use is very important,' Dr Ng said, adding it was important to pay attention to the expiry date on condom packages.

The Consumer Council notified the Customs and Excise Department of the test findings for any further investigations.

Full details of the test results and the brand placings can be found in the council's official magazine Choice or online at http://www.consumer.org.hk.
