Black light

There's something provocatively decadent about Baccarat's black crystal designs. Created by Philippe Starck, whose association with the French company goes back 11 years, they are a paradoxical combination of clear crystal (light) and shiny onyx (dark). The Un Parfait glasses (right; $14,800 for a set of six) have become cult objects owing in part to the difficulty in producing them: it takes Baccarat's crystal makers six attempts to produce a perfect specimen. More striking is Starck's Black Zenith chandelier (left; $431,000). The 50kg lighting master-piece, complete with 24 lights and lampshades ($1,000 each), can be viewed at Baccarat's new flagship store, shop 121, 1/F, Prince's Building, Central, tel: 2537 2303.
