Nokia wins deal to supply Thai PCN

FINLAND'S Nokia Telecommunications has been awarded a contract to supply the first personal communications network to Thai digital cellular operator Total Access Communication, the company says.

Nokia would supply TAC with the DCS 1800 system, which was based on the European standard, the Global System for Mobile Communication.

DCS 1800 worked at 1,800 megahertz rather than 900 MHz, allowing more radio channels, higher subscription density and a higher frequency range, Nokia said.

This was the first DCS 1800 system delivered outside Europe and gave Nokia a basis to make it the industry standard in Asia.

The GSM standard had been adopted by China, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and the Philippines, the firm said.
