Man charged in connection with attack on policeman appears in court

Updated at 5.02pm: A 23-year-old man, who allegedly slashed a police officer in Cheung Sha Wan on Tuesday, appeared in court on Thursday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

The man was charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon, the spokesman said.

The Kowloon City Magistrates? Court has adjourned the case and will hear it on September 15. The suspect was held in custody, local radio reported.

The prosecution told the court that police needed time to collect further evidence and seek instructions from the Justice Department before laying more charges against the man.

The man surrendered to police on Tuesday afternoon, hours after he allegedly attacked police constable Chu Chun-kwok in Po On Road, Cheung Sha Wan.

Investigations showed the man was poised to carry out a robbery on Tuesday morning when he was stopped by Chu.

The man allegedly slashed Chu?s neck with a fruit knife after being asked to produce his identity card.

Chu had chased the suspect for about 20 metres with blood spraying from his wound before collapsing.

Ming Pao Daily reported on Thursday that Chu was still in a critical condition in hospital on Thursday.
