HKUST receives $800 million

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has received a $800 million financial boost from the Fok Ying Tung Foundation for its development in mainland China.

Of the donation, $300 million will support the University Grants Committee-funded programmes.

The remaining $500 million will be spent on further research and technology exchanges through the establishment of an education and research institute in Nansha, Guangzhou.

'This gift provides an important funding source to achieve our strategic objectives,' said HKUST president Paul Chu Ching-wu. In 2003, the foundation donated $30 million to the university.
