Rail services resume in northeast after fatal collision

Train services on the line linking the northeastern cities of Changchun and Dalian resumed yesterday after workers completed repairs to damage from a late-night collision on Sunday.

Six passengers were killed and another 30 injured when a northbound train collided with a freight train near Changchun and five carriages were derailed.

The accident forced delays to trains, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at Shenyang's North Station until yesterday morning, according to Xinhuanet.

The injured passengers were rushed for emergency treatment to the nearby Shenyang Fourth Hospital, attached to the Chinese Medical University.

A hospital official told the South China Morning Post that most of the injured were suffering from fractures and trauma but all were out of danger.

'The 30 of them were rushed to our hospital from about 10pm onwards. About 120 of our staff, including the head of our hospital, joined the rescue effort,' the official said.

A woman who was on the train told of the huge shock of the collision. 'Some of the passengers sleeping on the top bunks fell to the floor,' she said.

It is unclear what caused the collision, but a Xinhua report on Sunday blamed a power cut.
