Getting around

Taxis are readily available but rarely use their meters. At Yalong Bay, trips around the beach area - from one hotel to another- cost 10 yuan. A run from Yalong to Dadonghai beach costs about 40 yuan. Prices for longer excursions, including hire for the day or an afternoon, are negotiable. The island's highway and road network has been substantially upgraded and traffic is relatively scarce, making getting around by car a breeze. At Boao, taxi transport is less convenient as the Sofitel and the Golden Coast hotels are relatively isolated. It is necessary to have hotel staff organise taxi hire for you.

Hainan is one of the few places in China where it is worth considering getting behind the wheel and steering your own path. The roads are uncluttered - aside from the occasional water buffalo - and road signs are consistently bilingual. However, the two major car hire companies are in Haikou. Consider flying into Haikou and driving to Sanya on the Eastern Coastal Highway, and back on the Western Coastal Highway for a round trip of Hainan's coastline.

There is a branch of the Bank of China at Dadonghai Beach and at Yalong Bay. The Holiday Inn at Yalong also has an ATM that dispenses yuan for international cards. In Sanya City, there are branches of all the major Chinese banks, and most of their ATMs are hooked up to international networks.
