16 arrested in crackdown on video-disc pirates

Customs officers believe they have smashed a syndicate controlling a large part of the market in pirated video discs in Mongkok. Officers arrested 16 people, including the gang's suspected leader, and seized pirated discs and CD writers worth $2 million in raids on 10 flats and shops on Thursday. Customs will apply to the courts to freeze $1.2 million in assets owned by the gang's suspected leaders.

woman, 79, dies after being struck by taxi

A taxi driver ran over and killed a 79-year-old woman crossing Nathan Road, Yau Ma Tei, yesterday. The driver, 52, had not been drinking, police said. Witnesses to the accident, which happened at 6am, are asked to call 2773 5220. A 33-year-old was arrested for failing a breath test after the van he was driving ran out of control in Lok Sin Road outside Tung Tau Estate, Wong Tai Sin, at 5am.

bogus bank website

Another bogus Fubon Bank website has been discovered - www.ibaonlinebanking.com - and anyone who has provided personal information to the website is urged to contact the bank on 2566 8181 and to notify police, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said.

Club worker slashed

A worker at a disco suffered cuts to his head, right arm and left thigh in an attack by three men outside the disco in Bute Street, Mongkok, at 2am. The 19-year-old was treated at Kwong Wah Hospital.
