Salon chain sued over slimming programme

A customer is suing a popular chain of beauty salons at the Small Claims Tribunal to recover $46,000, a large part of what she paid for a weight-loss programme a year ago.

Mandy Tsoi Miu-tan, who has been a customer of Modern Beauty Salon since 1998, says the result of a $57,000 slimming package in which she enrolled last August was poor. She also says the quality of service was unsatisfactory.

Ms Tsoi, who weighs 58kg, said outside the tribunal yesterday that she signed up for the programme because she wanted to look good when she got married this December.

'I am very disappointed at the service of the Modern Beauty Salon,' Ms Tsoi said. She no longer used the services of the salon.

Alex Hui, an in-house legal counsel for Modern Beauty, said yesterday: 'We remain open to reaching an amicable settlement with Ms Tsoi.'

He said there was no record of any complaint by Ms Tsoi to staff and that her case was an isolated incident.

Ms Tsoi contends in her claim that the beauty salon did not properly address her complaints. She said that whenever she made a complaint to staff of slow progress, they insisted other customers were making headway.

She argues that her goal was to shed 10 to 15 pounds (4.5kg to 7kg) and to reduce the size of her upper arms and lower body. She says she was assured by staff it would take one to two months to attain the desired result with the aid of salon equipment.

A full hearing will be held on November 14.
