Dummies seized

THOUSANDS of potentially deadly babies' dummies have been seized by customs officers after spot checks on 21 stores.

About 6,000 of the dummies, made in China and traded under the brand name Ivory, were confiscated by the Trading Standards Investigation Bureau after tests showed babies could suffocate if the dummies were swallowed.

The checks, carried out last week, enabled officers to find the supplier's warehouse, where the majority of the dummies, worth about $65,000, were seized under the Toys and Children's Products Safety Ordinance.

But the supplier, the Overseas Trading Company, said it had been selling the dummies in Hong Kong since 1985 without any problems or complaints.

A spokesman for the Customs and Excise Department said it intended to prosecute the supplier, who would be liable to a $500,000 fine and two years in jail if convicted.
