World and Olympic champion Michael Phelps told Hong Kong's up-and-coming swimmers they have the power to take their skills to the next level.

The 20-year-old American star, who won eight medals - including six gold - at last summer's Athens Olympics, attracted more than 100 fans and media people to a promotional event during his three-day visit last week.

The Baltimore-born Phelps talked openly about his phenomenal success, and took on four Hong Kong national team members in an exhibition race at Sham Wan Towers in Ap Lei Chau. The event was organised by Japanese electronics manufacturer Matsunichi, for whom Phelps is a brand ambassador.

'I know it is easy to say and harder to do, but the best advice I can give is never give up,' said Phelps.

'Learn to bounce back from the bad times, and enjoy success when it comes. If you love swimming, love competing, have fun being part of what it's all about, then you can be a great swimmer, too.'

Phelps, who recently won five gold and a silver medal at the World Championships in Montreal, Canada, said he was a normal person who was determined to make his dreams come true. 'I want people to look to me as an example of what is possible if you are determined, and put your mind to it. Anyone can do what I've done. Hopefully my success will inspire others to take their abilities to the next level,' he said.
